University Branding Review (UBR) Numbers/Editing
(allow at least one week per document)
External promotional materials are required to meet Penn State University editorial standards and need to be reviewed for correct use and appearance of University images, style, branding, and accuracy.
To ensure that proper reviews are done on official University materials, Penn State requires a University Branding Review (UBR) to be assigned to them, along with a non-discrimination blurb, and, when necessary, an ADA accommodation statement.
Penn State Scranton's Strategic Communications Office is responsible for assigning UBR numbers and editing these documents before they go to print. In addition to the UBR, the document will also be edited for typos, grammatical mistakes, misspellings, etc. These edits will be noted and must be made before the document is printed/distributed to ensure it meets University guidelines.
UBR numbers are required for all newly created materials (both printed and digital) primarily intended for external audiences, as well as existing materials each time a change is made to the content and must be done through Strategic Communications.
There are also some items for which an editorial review and UBR assignment must be made, but not required to be printed on, the actual document. Examples include billboards, print/digital advertisements, and formal invitations.
Examples of materials that NEED UBR numbers:
- Campaign emails (including, but not limited to, Admissions, Alumni, New Student Orientation)
-
Brochures
-
Flyers and postcards
- Posters (these do not include faculty and student research posters)
- Catalogs and handbooks
- Schedules of events
- Booklets and view books
- Programs
- Annual reports, newsletters, and magazines
- And other similar materials (when in doubt, have the material reviewed)
Examples of materials that DO NOT NEED UBR numbers:
-
Classroom instructional materials
- Scholarly journals
- Faculty papers and reports
- Internal memorandum
- Forms
- Non-Penn State promotional material
