Academic Advising Overview
Penn State Scranton’s advising community is committed to providing a proactive, student-focused, meaningful advising experience for all campus students. By fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment, professional and faculty advisors empower our diverse community of students to be active participants in the achievement of their academic and career goals. With the help of their academic adviser, students will be able to identify and understand relevant policies, procedures, academic requirements, campus resources and opportunities.
Academic Adviser Responsibilities:

Have working knowledge and understanding of current academic policies, procedures, and advising tools
- Understand and articulate how degree programs can meet student career and academic goals
- Identify program requirements and plan appropriate course schedules
- Serve as a referral for campus resources and services
- Engage in a collaborative advising relationship with students
Student Advisee Responsibilities:

Acquire information for course scheduling, program planning, and academic requirements
- Seek academic and career information needed to meet educational and career goals
- Become knowledgeable about academic policies, procedures, and degree planning tools
- Be an active participant in the advising process including preparing for and meeting with an academic advisor at least once each semester
- Assume responsibility for successful completion of degree requirements

New Student Orientation (NSO)
This required program introduces students to what it means to be part of the Penn State community, introduces students to valuable resources that they will use throughout their time at Penn State, and helps students begin planning their academic careers through advising and course scheduling.
