Individualized Option: Business, B.S

This option provides the opportunity for students to pursue an approved business-focused interdisciplinary program of study.

Create your own option in the Business major.

Penn State’s Bachelor of Science in Business is a professionally oriented business degree program that provides the opportunity for students to pursue the individualized option, an approved business-focused interdisciplinary program of study. The business major combines the core business disciplines of management, marketing, finance, accounting, management information systems, and supply chain management, with applied study in a practical setting, and offers a range of “options” or areas of focus, such as this individualized offering.

The individualized option in business allows you to design your own program of study tailored to your business career interests and professional goals, with guidance from your faculty advisor. The individualized business option empowers you to customize your curriculum by choosing courses from across multiple business disciplines. Whereas this degree’s other options each focus on a single business discipline, the individualized option enables the student to craft an 18-credit experience that combines two or more business areas (e.g., courses in management and financial services and business analytics).

You’ll love the individualized business major option if…

  • You have a collection of college credits from other institutions
  • You have specific or unique professional interests that are not represented within one of our other concentrations/options
  • You want transferable skills in the business sector
  • You have a broad knowledge of business operations that interests you
  • You cannot find a more specific option that aligns with your interests or previous college credits

What to expect in the individualized business option

The Business program’s interdisciplinary individualized option focuses on enhancing oral and written communication, fostering active and collaborative learning, promoting team-building and honing critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.

Graduating with a Penn State Business degree offers you many career options, and the individualized option uniquely positions you to a tailored business education.

Courses for the individualized business option

By opting for an individualized concentration in business, students prepare themselves to work in a business sector or start a career aligned with their unique interests. This personalized path involves interdisciplinary coursework and valuable internship experiences. As part of the individualized business option, you’ll work closely with a faculty advisor to select 18 credits of coursework that complement your core business administration classes. These offerings span diverse areas of study, including communications, human resources, marketing, management, finance, strategic planning and more.

A student's career/graduate school plans should be considered when developing an individualized academic plan. Be sure to consult an academic advisor.
