Our third annual event was a rousing success, with 45 attendees representing four campuses and University Park! Faculty and staff took part in hands-on Canvas training and instructional design presentations.

About the Sessions:
Hands-on Canvas training:
Faculty Chat: Using Canvas to Enhance Your Teaching - In this discussion-oriented seminar, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of Canvas at Penn State and will examine best uses of the tool for teaching and learning.
Creating and Delivering Effective Content in Canvas - This hands-on workshop will guide participants through the options for delivering course content through the Canvas Learning Management System. Participants in this workshop will learn how to create and manage Modules and Pages through hands-on practice and facilitated exploration of Canvas’s related features and options.
Transferring Content to Canvas - This hands-on workshop will teach participants how to move content from ANGEL and Microsoft Word to Canvas. Participants will have opportunities to practice moving text and exporting and importing graphics. They will also learn the steps for bulk extracting files and transferring quizzes to Canvas.
Innovative Pedagogy:
Selecting Technology to Improve Student Learning - In this session participants will learn about the pedagogical benefits of technology tools being utilized in shared courses, as well as, how to get started exploring them for their own courses. This session will focus on a round robin of technologies/practices including Clickers/Reef, Doceri, Lynda.com, Sites at Penn State, VoiceThread, Yammer, and group project technologies
Flipping the Classroom - “Flipping the classroom” is a pedagogical concept that replaces the in-class sessions with more hands-on application and activities while the out-of-class experience includes having lecture style material in addition to readings. Students explore concepts and review materials prior to coming to class instead of receiving information from the instructor. This session will explore this concept, as well as, as identify approaches and techniques for you to plan your own flipped classroom experience.
Gamification Techniques: Turning an International Terror Plot into a Classroom Game - The presentation will describe the effective application of a gamification technique in a course that produced a level of engagement and excitement that was greater than normal and far better than anticipated. The presentation will define and identify intrinsic and extrinsic motivators and have the session attendees experience an example of this firsthand through a simple hands-on exercise. During the presentation, the attendees will attempt to "find the hidden Lion" on the slides and keep a running total that will be shared at the end, with a prize awarded.
